SAL-74 HIGH FREQUENCY LIMITING SYSTEM
The SAL-74 is a two-channel high-frequency limiter that imposes a 10,000watt ballasted signal that goes to the cutter-head on the lathe. High frequencies (as on all amplifiers or stereo heads) produce a very high amount of watts. In the case of the cutter-head (the most important component on the entire cutting system), high frequencies produce large amounts of wattage that in turn converts to heat, which is then transferred to the 2 coils on the cutter-head. Examples of these high frequencies include drum symbols, keyboard-synthesizers, and various forms of feedback. If high frequency were high enough that the SAL recognizes while cutting, a simple breaker system in the SAL will simply cut off the signal going to the cutter-head. In other words, the SAL is nothing more than a "bodyguard" or protector for the cutter-head. Temperature and AMP gauges are also installed on this system in order to monitor the temperature and wattage/amps going to the cutter-head in order to prevent the breakers from tripping. If the cutter-head were to be barraged with too much heat and amperes, it will simply cook and fry like a speaker. (The cutter-head is valued at almost $10,000)
NEUMANN VMS-66 series DISK CUTTING SYSTEM
The technical name for the machine that I use to cut disks is called a "NEUMANN VMS-66 series DISK CUTTING SYSTEM" or a "record lathe". The term "lathe" is used due to its mechanical function. The system itself has a component on it called the "cutter head"(I use a SX-74 CUTTERHEAD), which is essentially a double-coiled output condenser microphone that focuses its vibrations towards a sapphire "stylus". The stylus is what comes into contact with the blank disks on the lathe. The stylus simply moves from left to right according to the vibrations that the cutter head produces thus creating the grooves that we have all come to love and admire.
WOW THATS AWESOME!! HOW CAN I HELP KEEP THE VINYL COMMUNITY GOING ON MY OWN!?
BUY A NEUMANN RECORD LATHE THROUGH A MAN WHO TAUGHT ME EVERYTHING...ALBERT GRUNDY !!
LEARN HOW THE LATHE WORKS, LEARN TO FIX IT,LEARN IT LIKE IT WAS A PART OF YOU!!
!!! HORRIFYING FACTOID FOR VINYL JUNKIES!!!
The last true lathe was made by Neumann and came off the assembly line in 1980. Being the Cadillac/Bentley of lathes, the Neumann is by far the highest quality of disk cutting systems ever developed. These beautiful machines are no longer made my friends. The remaining ones that are out there (not owned by Albert Grundy or Paul Gold) are being kept away from the world as if they were some kind of secret. The truth is that we are a dying breed. But it doesn't have to be like this. Remember vinyl cannot be made unless you have the machine that cuts the master disk!
...so what happens if all the machines are in the wrong hands or just plain forgotten about......where will vinyl be then?
